How to donate

By making a donation you will be helping people like Barbara Hodgson. Barbara Hodgson (pictured below right) and Christine Ashton (pictured below left) are two of Kidney Research UK’s most loyal and committed supporters. Through their shared experience of kidney disease and its devastating consequences, they know just how vital it is that research is conducted into better treatments - and ultimately a cure - for kidney disease.

Seven years ago, Barbara contracted a rare virus that caused her immune system to attack her kidneys. Within a week she was in hospital receiving life-saving dialysis treatment. She was told that she needed a kidney to survive, but whilst waiting for one to become available, became more and more ill. Barbara had known Christine since their daughters were at school together but became very close when Christine was later assigned as the careworker for her elderly mother.

"I was always sick when I returned home from dialysis, but Christine would be there to push me into the shower, and then tuck me into bed,” says Barbara of the support given by her friend. She helped with the housework and would cheer me up and restore my confidence when I got down."

However, Barbara could not have anticipated that Christine would go to her doctor and volunteer to donate a kidney to her! "At first, Barbara didn't want to accept my kidney in fear of anything happening to me, but eventually accepted after I threatened to give it to someone else if she didn't want it!" said Christine.

Since the transplant, Barbara and Christine have both worked hard to support Kidney Research UK - and with just one kidney each! As well as helping out at many of our events, Christine ran in the 2006 Great North Run, raising over 1,000 for us. We are proud to have such great volunteers with such inspirational stories fundraising for Kidney Research UK!
